The sitting administration on Thursday announced plans for additional ocean-based oil and gas drilling projects along the shoreline regions of each of the Golden State and the Sunshine State, setting the stage for a political showdown – including dissent from Florida GOP members who have largely objected to energy development in the Gulf region.

Industry Push for Growth

This statement coincides with the American energy industry, even with coping with depressed oil prices, has been advocating for admission to additional oceanic drilling locations. The sector's initiative for expanded access also represents an attempt to enhance employment and American energy autonomy.

Past Bans and Ecological Worries

The national authorities have restricted marine drilling in the east Gulf, which reaches from Floridian coasts to sections of the state of Alabama, since the mid-1990s. The prohibition resulted from worries about possible oil spills.

Although the state of California does have some ocean-based petroleum activities, there have not been recent leases in government waters for close to 30 years.
