The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
