French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to back the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
