A Minimum of 98 Palestinians Lost Their Lives in Detention Since October 2023, Official Figures Indicates
Based on figures released by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have died while detained since October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has stated that the actual number is probably substantially larger, due to hundreds of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Official armed forces most recently revised information on deaths in detention for May 2024, and the prison service in September 2024. Investigators identified another 35 deaths in detention subsequent to these periods and validated them with government bodies.
Even with the total number of fatalities recorded being much greater than earlier projections, it likely omits the full scale of Palestinian casualties, according to the leader of the prisoners and detainees department.
“Even though we are presenting proof for a larger total of casualties than previously reported, this is an incomplete account,” he stated. “We are certain that there are still individuals who died in custody that we are unaware of.”
Civilian Deaths
Classified Israeli data suggests that the vast majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who perished in detention were non-combatants, based on a related inquiry.
In May of 2024, a military intelligence database monitoring all fighters in Gaza, a registry of in excess of 47,000 listed people, listed merely 21 deaths in detention. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.
Custodial Environment

“Despite this mass number of fatalities, over two years not one individual has faced arrest,” the representative said. “There exist no prosecutions over any fatality.
“During the time these measures continue to be enforced, every Palestinian in custody is in danger, even the healthy ones, including the young ones who have no underlying conditions.”
Notable Incidents
Certain fatalities in confinement have been publicly known, such as a middle-aged hospital director who perished in confinement after a third of a year in detention.
An inmate incarcerated with the deceased stated that he was led to the courtyard by correctional officers just prior to his demise, visibly injured and unclothed from the waist down. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.
Other prisoners who lost their lives in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Detention administrators and military provided analysts with the total of deaths in custody, and minimal other details including the location where they died, but excluding the prisoners’ names.
Recognition Difficulties
In 21 cases, mostly individuals from Gaza, investigators were not able to connect the few details given by government bodies to a death documented by rights organisations, either through statements from released detainees or coverage in the media.
The inmates’ next of kin may not know about their loved ones’ deaths as well, as Israel has made it difficult to track Palestinians it is detaining. For seven months at the outset of the conflict, the armed services declined to provide basic information about the whereabouts of numerous of persons detained in Gaza, effectively carrying out a practice of unacknowledged detention, according to the human rights group.
